When is an interim reference appropriate?

What is the difference compared with the full reference template?

In terms of content, the same requirements apply, but in formal terms: tense in the present ("works" instead of "worked"), no closing formula, no reason for leaving. The interim reference template is tailored precisely to that.

When is there an entitlement?

Where there is a legitimate interest — recognised cases include in particular: change of supervisor, reorganisation, an upcoming external application, extended absences. The entitlement is shaped to be employee-friendly.

Does the occasion have to be stated in the text?

Not necessarily. If mentioned, then in a neutral and factual way ("at the employee's request", "on the occasion of a reorganisation"). A specific external application should not be mentioned — this would put the person at a disadvantage.
